Pearl Symbolism

In the story, The Pearl, we learn that the pearl evokes many more bad feelings in people than good, as we learned from the attempted theft in the middle of the night. To Kino, the pearl gives him hope that his son will someday go to school and save them from poverty. With Juana, the pearl is evil and she urges Kino to throw it back into the ocean we he found it. The neighbors in the village appear jealous of the new treasure that Kino has found and some may attempt to steal it from them out of jealousy. to the doctor and the priest, they see only money. The doctor see's himself back in Paris, with a bottle of wine and enjoying himself. The priest ponders over whether or not he baptized Kino and Juana's baby, and if he could get any money at all for repairs for the church. The poor townspeople, when they receive word of the Pearl of the World, they wonder if they will get any money from Kino and Juana.
